Join Burren farmer, Aoife Forde on a walk up to her family’s winterage pastures in the heart of the Burren. Aoife has grown up in Carron, farming alongside her father P.J. and her mother Fiona. At 23, she is pursuing a Masters in Agriculture Innovation and Support and is passionate about farming for nature in the Burren.
The 6km trail will bring us along a beautiful ‘green road’ with stunning views of the Burren hills and of Carron turlough to the summit of the hill where the cattle have been spending the winter grazing out the winter pastures.
The practice of Winterage or herding cattle from the lowlands up to the highlands for grazing over winter is unique to the Burren and nearby Aran Islands. This ancient and unique farming tradition was recently added to Ireland’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage and plays a vital role in conserving the Burren’s famous landscape and its biodiversity.
Walk start location: Will be emailed in the week before the walk.
Walk length: Approx. 6 Kms
Walk duration: 2pm – 5pm
Fee: €10 (€5 for Burrenbeo members) as donation to the Burrenbeo Trust. Donations will be collected on the day.
