‘Wells and Walls in the Burren’
with David Drew
Sunday 7th October 2018
@1pm in a central Burren location.
Please note early start time of 1pm. This is a challenging 3-hour walk.
The Burrenbeo Trust October members’ walk, led by David Drew, is an extensive loop walk of c.7km, looking at features of both the natural landscape, such as a gorge valley, and the cultural landscape – cahers, strange field walls, a holy well and much more…
Our walk leader, David Drew, was Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography at Trinity College, Dublin, from 1972 until his retirement in 2011. He lectured in surface and groundwater hydrology, soils and karst geomorphology and has research interests in karstic hydrogeology (underground water) and landforms, in particular the hydrogeology of the limestones of Ireland, including those of the Burren, where he now lives. David has been a keen caver since he was very young and continues to enjoy trips underground, particularly in the Burren caves. He has written a book on The Karst of Ireland which will be published later this year by Geological Survey Ireland.
Suitable footwear, such as walking boots, is essential, and waterproof boots are recommended – possibly wellington boots if the weather has been wet in the days prior to the walk. Please wear appropriate clothing for possible wet, blustery weather, including waterproofs. Hi-vis vests are strongly recommended, as some of the walk is on public roads. No dogs allowed. This is a challenging walk and a good level of fitness is required. Start location will be sent to members in advance. Sign up for Burrenbeo Trust membership here.
