Separate Burial Tradition in the Burren – Cillíní/ Children’s Burial Grounds

a talk with Tony Kirby

There are more than 1,400 cillíní/children’s burial grounds in the Republic of Ireland. The unconsecrated sites were prevalently used to inter unbaptised babies. However, there are also categories of adults buried at these sites who were not deemed worthy of interment on consecrated ground.

The talk will include insights in to the history, geography, archaeology, theology and folklore of cillíní. There will also be a look at how the burial grounds are portrayed in art form. The lecture will be illustrated with photographs of cillíní in the Burren as well as new findings pertaining to these sites.

Tony Kirby is a full-time walk leader in the Burren. He has lectured extensively on cillíní. Tony audited the holy wells of North Clare for the Clare Holy Wells Project https://heritage.clareheritage.org/category/places/holy-wells

All welcome, suggested donation of 5 euro. All donations will be used to support the local Playground fund.

Hosted by Kilkeedy Community Group and the Burrenbeo Trust.

Tubber Hall can be found on google maps here.
