Irish Christmas Folklore, Customs and Traditions with Michael Fortune
In this talk, Michael Fortune looks at Christmas from a uniquely Irish perspective. Delving into a wealth of research and knowledge, this talk will introduce you to customs and traditions found around the country from Christmas mumming plays and carols, to the keeping of pieces of straw from the Christmas crib and or burning last years’ Christmas holly.
Michael runs the online resource, folklore.ie on Facebook and has recently produced a publication of Irish folklore calendar dates. If you haven’t seen or heard of Michael’s work before, prepare to be enthused, excited, informed and entertained by Ireland’s leading light in the area of folklore and folk-culture.
Speaking at the launch of this collection in The National Library in 2016, Manchán Magan said: “There have only been a few people – guardians, sacred recorders – who have collected and documented this material and Michael is one of them. Michael Fortune in years to come is going to be Ireland’s Alan Lomax.”
