‘Winging It – Butterflies of the Burren’
with Jesmond Harding
Sunday 1st July, 2018
at 2pm in a Central Burren Location
The butterfly season was off to a late start this year after the extended winter, but we’re counting on the Burren butterflies to make an appearance for our July walk with Jesmond Harding! The walk will explore a beautiful area of the Burren where there are many species of butterflies, including the Marsh Fritillary. This lovely butterfly has a remarkable variety of colouring, patterning and size, with no two ever alike. It is the only legally protected species in Ireland and its habitat must be maintained if it is to continue to survive.
The walk will be led by Jesmond Harding of Butterfly Conservation Ireland, an organisation run by dedicated volunteers with a deep concern for our butterflies. Butterfly Conservation Ireland operates a nature reserve in Lullybeg, Co. Kildare, where active conservation techniques enhance the habitat for several scarce and endangered species. Jesmond is a published author on butterflies, with a particular interest in endangered species, and he is a regular visitor to the Burren.
Please note the start time for the walk is 2pm. Suitable footwear is essential, and waterproof boots are recommended, as is appropriate clothing for the weather, including waterproofs. No dogs allowed. While the focus of the walk will be on information sharing rather than covering large distances, a reasonable level of fitness is required. Start location will be sent to Burrenbeo Trust members in advance. If you are not yet a member, you can sign up for membership on www.burrenbeo.com.
