Roughan and Knockloon: A tale of two Burren hills’ with Ros O Maolduin
Between 2015 and 2018, excavations were carried out on two neighboring hills on the southeast of the Burren, Co. Clare: Roughan and Knockloon Hills. On Roughan, three wedge tombs were excavated and on Knockloon a barrow and a circular enclosure were partially excavated. This was complemented by geophysical surveys on Knockloon in 2017 and 2018, and continued decades of previous work on Roughan Hill. The 2015-2018 phase of excavation initially set out to investigate the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age periods, the times during which the wedge tombs were built, and has substantially added to our understanding of that period; however, remains from several other periods were also found. This talk will give an account of what has been found on these hills, beginning in the Neolithic and running right up to the post-medieval period.
