“A Tale of Two Rivers (what you don’t see from the M18)”
with David Drew
The lowland extending from Kinvara on Galway Bay to Ennis and the Shannon estuary in the south, has none of the striking landscapes and other tourist attractions of the Burren upland to the west. Yet it is a karst (limestone) landscape, very similar to the Burren but almost wholly neglected by tourists, except perhaps Ballylee and Coole Park and their literary associations. This talk attempts to rectify this neglect to some extent by suggesting that the area has some of the most remarkable (bizarre even, maybe) natural features to be found in Ireland. The talk introduces these features by following the courses of the two river systems that drain the area – the River Fergus to the south and the Gort River to the north.
Our speaker, David Drew, was Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography at Trinity College, Dublin, from 1972 until his retirement in 2011. He lectured in surface and groundwater hydrology, soils and karst geomorphology and has research interests in karstic hydrogeology (underground water) and landforms, in particular the hydrogeology of the limestones of Ireland, including those of the Burren, where he now lives. He is also interested in applying some of the methods used to investigate karst areas to assist in the understanding of archaeological monuments in limestone areas such as the Burren. David has been a keen caver since he was very young and continues to enjoy trips underground, particularly in the Burren caves. He has written a book on The Karst of Ireland which was published early this year by Geological Survey Ireland and is contributing to a forthcoming book on the caves of the west of Ireland.
The talk will start at the usual time of 8.30pm at Tubber hall but the kettle will be on at 8pm so you can grab a cuppa first.
Tubber Hall can be found on google maps here.
Talks are open to all, free to Burrenbeo Trust members and a suggested donation of €5 for non-members. More information on how to become a Burrenbeo Trust member can be found here: https://burrenbeo.com/support-us/become-a-member/
