Burrenbeo Trust would like to invite you to our annual midsummer’s walk and family picnic in the Burren. There will be two options of guided walks available to cater for varying abilities.
Location: The meeting point for both the walks will be Ballyconroy, Ballyvaughan (2km west of Ballvaughan). Find the exact meeting location on google maps here.
Long walk: 2-5pm A long uphill walk over Cappanawalla mountain starting at 2 pm. A good level of fitness is required for this walk, over rough limestone terrain. This walk will be led by Brendan Dunford, Manager of the Burren Programme, and Patsy Linnane, farmer.
Short walk: 4-5pm A short gentle walk suitable for walkers of varying abilities, guided by Sharon Parr, naturalist, starting at 4pm. This walk is well suited for families however please note that the track is not buggy-friendly.
BYO Picnic: 5pm-6pm Both the walks will end at the starting location, where, weather permitting, we hope to have a picnic. We will have tea and scones available but feel free to bring your own food or some for sharing too.
This walk is an opportunity for all our members and friends to come together to celebrate and enjoy the extraordinary landscape that is the Burren and to remember our co-founder Ann O’Connor Dunford.
This is an open-to-all, free event but there will be the option throughout the day to contribute to the Young Burren Leaders Bursary Fund set up in memory of Ann. More information on this here.
What to bring:
- Good supportive walking shoes are essential. The Burren is uneven terrain and this walk is not always on a path, it is through a variety of habitats including a lot of off-road and across limestone.
- Waterproof and warm clothing. It may have started as a sunny day but you never know in these parts!
- Suncream and sunhat. In case of a good sunny day the limestone reflects the sun and there ain’t much shelter in the Burren!
- Walking sticks can be handy.
- Bring water and of course your sandwiches and cakes etc for the picnic at the end. We won’t be passing any shops along the way!
- We will be walking on public and private land where livestock may be present, so STRICTLY NO DOGS ALLOWED.
We are grateful to Patsy Linnane for allowing us to walk on his farmland.
