‘Step into Nature – What to look out for in the weeks ahead’ with Rachel McKenna”
This presentation will follow the format of Rachel’s recent publication Step into Nature, providing a chronological view of some of the finds we can hope to look out for in the weeks and months ahead. It will cover, briefly, some of the flora and fauna generally found in the garden or on local walks. By simply slowing down, listening, and observing, we can discover miniature wonders of nature. Wonders which fill us with awe when we learn of their complexities. Or those that are so heartachingly beautiful that the memory stays with you, long after the seasons change.
Rachel McKenna is a dedicated naturalist who has spent the last five years passionately observing, recording, photographing, and drawing a diverse range of Irish wildflowers, insects, and mammals. Her meticulous work as a citizen scientist has involved systematically documenting species with the National Biodiversity Data Centre and actively participating in several special interest groups, such as ‘Insects and Invertebrates of Ireland’, ‘MothsIreland’, and ‘British and Irish Sawflies’.
Rachel is the Senior Executive Architect in Offaly County Council and the author of three books on architecture. Her most recent work, Traditional Architecture in Offaly: History, Materials and Furniture 1800 to Present Day (2022), was shortlisted and received an Honourable Mention in the Katharine Briggs Award 2023. Her other publications include Flights of Fancy: Follies, Families and Demesnes in Offaly (2017) and Geashill: The Evolution of its Architecture (2012).
