Yellow rattle seed (Rhinanthus minor)

€15.00

Harvested from a beautiful meadow in the Burren by Burrenbeo Conservation Volunteers, these seeds of the valuable yellow rattle wildflowers are now available to buy in limited quantities and for a limited time only. Priority will be given to Trust members.

Yellow rattle/ Rhinanthus minor / gliográn is wonderful plant, a hemi-parasite which is also sometimes known as ‘the meadow maker’ for its famous ability to suppress the growth of grass and encourage a greater diversity of wildflowers to thrive. It is one of the most important plants you need for creating a natural wildflower meadow in your garden.

Only one packet can be bought per order so that the maximum number of people can benefit from the seeds. You only need a few plants to grow in the first year as they’ll produce much more seed for you in following years. However they do need to go into the ground this autumn as the seeds are short-lived and need the whole winter in order to germinate in spring.

Description

(Following instructions come with the seed packet)

Seeds need to be sown fresh so sow as soon as possible. A handful of seeds are enough for approx. 1m². You only need a few plants to grow in the first year as they’ll produce much more seed for you in following years.

  • Between August and October cut grass as short as possible. Remove hay or clippings and scarify with a rake to expose small patches of bare soil.
  • Scatter seeds by hand directly onto the soil surface and gently tread into the soil(by November at the latest or germination will be poor)
  • Do not mow the patch next spring to protect seedlings.
  • To manage a meadow for wildflowers keep the grass short in late autumn and winter and remove clippings.
