Explore the secret history of a Burren valley with Pius Murray.
Join us for Burrenbeo’s monthly members’ walk with walking guide Pius Murray, to tap into the rich history and spirituality of a quiet Burren valley in Oughtmama, Bell Harbour. This walk will take us on a cattle track into an enclosed valley between Turlough hill and Hag’s bit and up towards St.Colman’s holy well in Outghmama. This valley is famous for its early christian history, evidence of which is seen today in the remains of three churches from the 10th, 11th and 12th century.
We will also be walking in the footsteps of W.B. Yeats who wrote this poem inspired by his walk through this valley.
“The abbey passed,
We are soon among the stone,
And shall be at the ridge, before the cocks
Of Aughanish or Bailevlehan
Or grey Oughtmama shake their wings and cry”.
– The Dreaming of the Bones
