Dick is the Architectural Conservation Officer and Archaeologist with Clare County Council. He is responsible for the built heritage of the county including historic buildings, vernacular houses, protected structures and architectural conservation areas (ACAs) in towns and villages. Having studied in UCD and UCG, he has worked in the conservation and restoration of historic buildings since the 1980s. In 1986 he restored Dysert O’Dea Castle, Corofin, County Clare which has been open to the public, since, as The Clare Archaeology Centre and Trail. He has published widely on local history, archaeology, vernacular architecture and placenames of County Clare and his Castles and Towerhouses of Clare has been published on archaeology.ie by the National Monuments Service.
Dick’s talk will deal with the design, materials, trades, costs and contracts for the building of over 70 towerhouses in the Burren, and will be illustrated with photos, drawings and maps.
The talk will start at the usual time of 8.30pm at Tubber Hall. The kettle will be on at 8pm so you can grab a cuppa first.
