This October bank holiday (24th – 27th Oct), join the Burren farmers in celebrating the ancient autumnal tradition of Winterage in the Burren. Take a look at the outline of events on www.burrenwinterage.com. Focusing on the theme of ‘Building healthy futures for people, food and nature’, the Burren Winterage Weekend 2019 promises a rich variety of events such as talks, field trips, farm demonstrations, farm walks, a farm innovation fair, book readings, a children’s art workshop, a Herdsman’s Walk and the community cattle drove to celebrate our farming heritage in the Burren. Many events are free (with donations welcome) and some are fundraisers for the Burrenbeo Trust. Some events require advance booking! All tickets available to book on bit.ly/BWWtickets
We’ll start with the Burren Winterage School on Sustainable Farming from Thursday 24th to Saturday 26th, including talks, workshops and field trips on the theme of Building healthy futures for people, food and nature. A farming innovation fair will be held in Kilfenora Mart on Friday. Saturday’s programme offers opportunities to explore our farming heritage, including farm walks, demonstrations of farming traditions and farm-related book readings. The national Farming for Nature Awards, on Saturday evening, celebrate farmers who manage their land and livestock in a way that really benefits nature in their area. On Sunday, the Burren Food Fayre will showcase the best of the Burren’s food and drink, with fascinating talks and live cooking demonstrations. The final event, and the main attraction of the weekend for many, will be the Burren Winterage Cattle Drove on Sunday, with visitors from near and far joining a local family as they re-enact the centuries-old tradition of herding cattle up to their winterage pastures.
