The Irish Curlew, one of the country’s most loved and recognizable birds is the focus of our Online Tea Talk with Barry O’Donoghue.
We are in danger of being the last generation to hear the Curlew’s haunting call in the bogs and meadows of the Irish summer. Hard work is underway to ensure we do not lose this iconic bird from our natural environment. Barry O’Donoghue will take us through these efforts and what you can do to help.
Dr. Barry O’Donoghue is Head of Agri-Ecology with the National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS). Barry hails from the Kingdom of Kerry where he grew up in the Stack’s Mountains with a combination of farming and nature interests. Barry specializes in nature conservation programmes ranging across various habitats and species, some of the more notable being Hen Harrier, Corncrake and Curlew, all signals of a changed rural landscape in Ireland. In 2017, Barry established the Curlew Conservation Programme, which works closely with landowners and local communities to help support the last remaining Curlew in Ireland.
