Burren Visitor Info Sport
There is a wide range of sporting activities to participate in, or to observe, within the Burren. Most traditional among these would be the games of Gaelic football and hurling. Both games are uniquely Irish and combine an admirable display of courage, fitness and skill. Games are held among local clubs most weekends during the summer, and its easy to drop in to see a game at the local pitch. The bigger County games are usually held in Ennis or Galway.
Golfing is a particularly popular sport among visitors to the Burren. The legendary links course at Lahinch has now been matched by the Greg Norman designed course at Doonbeg, and are among the best courses in Ireland and beyond. These are complemented by several other 18-hole courses, those in Gort and Ennis the closest to the Burren.
Annual point-to-point horse races are held in Bell Harbour every February, while Kilnaboy is the home of Burren Athletics, with a very strong club based these. There are Cycling and Walking clubs as well. A good number of Gyms are found in towns around the Burren as well. Galway has a Greyhound stadium and is home to the Galway United soccer team.
