Our Programmes
Though the Burrenbeo Trust was launched as a membership Organisation in December 2008, the work of Burrenbeo (`the living Burren') began in 2002 with the development (and subsequent redevelopment) of the portal website for the Burren www.burrenbeo.com which services over 1m unique visitors every year and has answered thousands of visitor e-mails.
The original Burrenbeo project also delivered the cutting edge Heritage Education Programme Eco-Beo to almost 400 young Burren 'experts', and complemented this with the development of state of the art educational resource materials including a CD ROM, interactive on-line modules, multilingual factsheets, posters and so on. In 2005 Burrenbeo opened a free information centre in the gateway Burren town of Kinvara. Burrenbeo has also conducted research and advanced proposals for a more strategic and sustainable approach to the management of the Burren.
The Burrenbeo Trust hopes, with your help, to build on this solid foundation and on the strong support for its work from the local communities of the Burren and from the range of State organisations and agencies we have worked with in the past. Our resource centre in Kinvara now serve as the trust offices but also as a centre for distributing free Burren information and continues to be home of Cafe Beo.
With the support of our partners in the Heritage Council Burrenbeo will continue to consult with all Burren stakeholders - in particular the farming community - on shaping a new vision, a new charter, for the Burren. We hope to have monthly walks and talks so we can all learn more about this wonderful place and meet new people who love the Burren.
The core objectives of the Burrenbeo Trust are:
- to create a greater appreciation of the Burren as a living landscape of international importance;
- to promote its holistic and self-sustaining conservation and development through research on best practice nationally and internationally;
- to engage farming families and local communities in the decision-making processes affecting the area;
- to promote dialogue between interested parties at local, regional and national levels;
- to raise the consciousness of local children, their parents and families on the very special nature of the Burren through outreach work in local schools and
- to suggest models of sustainable ecological and economic development
To acheive these objectives and to deliver on our ambitious work programme we will need you help. So please join us on our journey and help make the Burrenbeo Trust a real success.
